Description
If you are looking for that bigger, richer mandolin-family voice, the Eastman MDA815 mandola steps right into that space. Built in an F-style body with a solid Adirondack spruce top and highly flamed maple back and sides, it has a strong visual presence before you even play a note. The gloss finish, ivoroid binding, and pearl flowerpot headstock inlay give it a classic, high-end look that fits right in with traditional acoustic instruments.
There is a lot of depth in the way this mandola responds. Adirondack spruce brings a quick, punchy attack, while the flamed maple keeps everything tight and focused. Compared to a standard mandolin, the larger body and lower tuning give you more low-end presence and a fuller overall voice. Chords feel thick and supportive, and single-note lines carry with clarity while still having a bit more weight behind them.
The feel is familiar but scaled to match the instrument’s role. A 13 7/8 inch scale length, 1 3/32 inch nut width, and radiused ebony fingerboard give it a comfortable playing experience, while the adjustable compensated ebony bridge helps dial things in. Gotoh tuners keep everything stable, and the cast aluminum tailpiece adds durability without getting in the way. Housed in a hardshell case, the MDA815 is a great option for players wanting to expand into mandola with a well-built, traditional-style instrument.
